Immortal Universal Law by Coletha Albert

The air in the high-rise apartment was always freezing, no matter how high Eleanor set the thermostat. At 589 years old, she had lived through centuries of changing empires, shifting borders, and the rise and fall of civilizations. Born under the fiery, stubborn sign of Aries in a long-forgotten era, her unnaturally prolonged life had been defined by a fierce will to surviveβ€”and by the choices she had made along the way.

For centuries, Eleanor had walked the earth, leaving behind a trail of secrets. Among them were twenty-two pregnancies she had chosen to terminate across different eras, eras where survival was harsh and the future uncertain. It wasn’t until modern times that she finally decided to carry a child to term, giving birth to a daughter, Mara, who was now a young woman completely unaware of her mother’s true age or dark history.

But across the United States, the cosmic scales were violently rebalancing. Karma, long dormant, had awakened with terrifying velocity.

It started with the mirrors. Mara would catch glimpses of shadowy silhouettes standing just behind her, only for them to vanish when she turned around. Then came the soundsβ€”the synchronized, echoing voices reverberating through the walls of their high rise, a chorus of vengeful spirits.

The twenty-two souls Eleanor had turned away were no longer scattered throughout the ether. They had reunited with each other. Bound by a shared grievance and a collective consciousness, they had formed an eerie, spectral alliance. And they hadn’t just come for Eleanor and their numerous fathers; they were targeting the life their parents  had chosen to keep, bringing a torrent of horrific bad fortune that plagued every endeavor, from sudden, unexplained illnesses to catastrophic accidents.

Yet, as Eleanor soon discovered through the frantic whispers on the news and the panic gripping the nation, her household was not isolated. This reckoning was unfurling on a massive, continental scale.

Across the country drenched in blood, the souls of the never born were rising in league with one another. They were a unified force, a supernatural whirlwind sweeping from the east coast to the west coast. Their judgment was not limited to the women who had carried them; they sought a absolute, unyielding revenge on all the procreatorsβ€”both male and female, doctors and nursesβ€” every responsible person involved in the desecration of this portion of their physical journeys. They petitioned Elohim and their petition for retribution was approved. The β€œReap what You Sow” edict was enacted effective immediately.

In New York, wealthy executives who had walked away from their responsibilities found their lives dismantled by unseen, sanctified forces. In Los Angeles, couples woke to find their homes defaced with phantom handprints and their fortunes utterly reversed. The phenomenon was swift, precise, and unyielding. The collective entity of these spirits operated with a hive-mind intelligence, orchestrating a nationwide campaign of spiritual retribution and holy judgment. Mara was clearly oblivious of her mother’s secrets.  She expected that all the news media were announcing β€œfake news” from across the nation. She was wrong.

Back in her high rise apartment, Eleanor stood before the living room window, looking out at the city lights flickering below in the vast darkness. She could feel the disembodied souls  pressing against the glassβ€”twenty-two distinct, viral presences, backed by the millions of others marching across the nation. She remembered the love making. She remembered the missed periods. She remembered the whispered conversations and referrals. She remembered the monies paid to various people… over the centuries…

Eleanor knew that the past is ever with us all. She knew that sooner or later every β€œcheck” comes due, even if it takes 589 years to post.  She took a deep breath and was relieved because the balancing of her books was in full force now. There were many times Eleanor had the opportunity to balance her own books but she would not face it.

Today was the day and this was the moment that she faced her doom but not alone because the entire country of the United States time had come. It was their turn to be sifted and only a precious few would escape…

In 111 years the country formally known as the United States would begin again and Eleanor would be there to help this land’s humans avoid the mistakes of today. If she failed as in other timelines, the absolute law of the universe would faithfully strike again and again without fail…
