I have never been on a submarine. I have been on a naval ship. I have climbed aboard and felt how solid the metal is beneath my feet. It’s not a cruise ship. It’s not a sail boat. It’s not a yacht. Wood is completely different from metal. I imagine a submarine is the same metal encapsulated. If you are not a fan of tight spaces then a submarine is not for you.
When I was a child, I once took a field trip on a river boat. It was all too much to take in. My teacher was too relaxed herself to do any teaching so the class just copied her – relaxed and breathed in the peace and quiet. We listened to the sounds of the water as the big wheel turned gliding us along the surface of serenity.
On the inside of the river boat was a glass floor and I could see fish, turtles and greenery gliding by and I WAS FREAKED OUT.
It made me uneasy. It made me afraid. I felt fear explode and fill my chest… I was on the water and not in it. I was surrounded by oxygen and my classmates. I was with my teacher who was the example of calm, confidence, peace, and intelligence. She was easy to laugh, easy to instruct, easy to respect, easy to admire – a born teacher.
I was reminded of this field trip from so long ago because of the men trapped and lost in the submarine in the north Atlantic. I have not thought of that field trip in eons. Yet I remember it vividly.
I don’t know what’s happening in that submarine right now. I don’t know anything about those billionaires. I have gleaned a lesson from their plight. My Daddy said you have to have book sense, street sense, and common sense in this world. I believe my Dad was right.
Submarines have been around for a while. Looking at this particular one red flags should have been going off all over the place right? However, these were billionaires. They didn’t amass the fortunes they have by playing it safe. They took chances – a lot of them. They made mistakes that they bounced back from right?
When do billionaires learn that you can no longer do what you have always done?
It’s a simple lesson every child learns. As you become an adult, you learn to put away Lincoln logs and jump ropes. You get a job and pay bills. Lessons you must learn are respect for yourself, respect for life, and respect for others. I see people all the time being very disrespectful. I don’t say anything. It’s a lesson every person must learn. As my great grandmother used to say, “Every tub has to sit on it’s own bottom.”
Even a fool must learn this lesson. All gang members must learn this lesson. The roach under the kitchen sink must learn this lesson. The eagle perched on the side of the mountain must learn this lesson. The Black Fish swimming in Puget Sound must learn this lesson. The guests and crew of the titanic knows of this lesson now. I suppose the billionaires in the submarine in the north Atlantic now know of this lesson too.

She was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. Thomas Andrews, the chief naval architect of the shipyard, died in the disaster. Titanic was under the command of Captain Edward Smith, who went down with the ship. The ocean liner carried some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as hundreds of emigrants from Great Britain and Ireland, Scandinavia, and elsewhere throughout Europe, who were seeking a new life in the United States and Canada.

This is John Jacob Astor IV in 1909. He was the wealthiest person aboard Titanic – he did not survive.
This is John Pierpont Morgan owner of the Titanic. He was scheduled to be on the ship for the maiden voyage but canceled at the last minute. He was born April 17, 1837 in Hartford, CT. He died March 31, 1913 at The Saint Regis Rome, Rome, Italy.
The Titanic was laid down on March 31, 1909, launched on May 31, 1911, completed on April 2, 1912 and sank on April 15, 1912.
11 months later J.P. Morgan died. He died in his sleep at the age of 75, leaving his fortune and business to his son, John Pierpont Morgan Jr. The senior J.P. suffered from chronic skin rosacea that gave him a hideously bulbous purple nose. He smoked dozens of Havanas. President Roosevelt actually sued J.P. Morgan personally for antitrust violations under the Sherman Act.
Ambitious people take chances personally, professionally…is that what life is really about? The gambler takes chances as does a fool. Some folks are adrenaline junkies. It’s not the destination but the wreckless journey that allow them to feel alive. Some folks love to look Death in the eyes and taunt him. Is that respectful?
Remember an employee of Oceangate warned of likely death of guests and he was fired. Another person who actually went down in the submarine said that they sign away their lives by going down into the thing. Foolhardy and disrespectful from every angle, inclination, and iteration.
They went down into the ocean to see death, with death, inside of death.
