Going: Poem by Coletha Albert

We just made a baby

It was the holidays

Your mom was in town

You told me

I couldn’t meet her

We were over

You didn’t know it

I kept it moving

Because I knew where I was going

You chose a juvenile felon

After all the evil you had done

You brought her to my house

Like a prize you had won

She was nothing like us

The “streets” you can’t trust

That was your choice

Despite all my work and sacrifice

I went to Baghdad

Because I knew where I was going

You embarrassed me

You put your hands on me

You slandered me

Before people who hated me

And hated you too

You stole from me too

You tore up my birth certificate

You were nothing to me

That was it

Years later I buried you

I chose our last outfit for you

I mourned the life you never knew

Because I knew where I was going

My destination didn’t include you

Since I came here

I always knew

Where I was going

I wanted to take you all too

It wasn’t meant to be

I had to let you all go

You were too fearful

Too small

Too young

Too new

Where I was going

Wasn’t meant for you too

I always knew where I was going

I have no feelings regarding where you’re going too

You all have your own destinations

If you make it to where I am going

We’ll meet and regroup

Either way

It’s not up to me

To force you to go with me

You can’t go

Where I am going, going, going…

I have arrived

With no baggage

Cause I left you all behind.

My true family and friends were here all the time

Everything I gave to all of you

Was not for you

You rejected it all

You rejected me

And this is your greatest gift to me

Now I live in peace

Now I am friends with those who are friends to me

Now I am family with those who are my true family

You all were never meant to come with me

You all were a test for me

Would I forfeit my true friends and family

For people who neglected and abused me

By resisting you all

I am worthy

I am not like you all

I was never supposed to be

Because you hated me

I chose not to agree with you

Because you rejected me

I chose not to agree with you

Because you agreed with my enemies

You couldn’t be with me

And that’s okay with me

You have a different destiny

A different path

A different fate

I am okay with that

I chose not to force myself

To stay with you

I chose not to force myself

To bond with you

It was never meant to be

That’s okay with me

It the moment that I rounded that “corner” in my life

My destination came into view.
