Trust

Bossier, Louisiana

She trusted in her spells

So when the Texas Dyke called her name

She answered

She trusted in her spells

So when all the other fishermen said it was too dangerous to take the boat out

She went anyway

She trusted in her spells

So when she heard the thunder clap as the gulf of Mexico churned…she smiled to herself

And took her boat out anyway

She trusted in her spells

It was through those spells that she failed

It cost her everything including her life

Her spirit raged

She watched the crabs eat her eyes out as her body ebbed and flowed in the Gulf of Mexico

The Coast Guard knew where her body flowed to and fro’ in the Gulf of Mexico

Even with spells you can’t do what you want

Throw caution to the winds

Dominate all your friends

Use all your fiends

Assassinate your kids

Kill them all in their cribs

Put elementals within

To be your governors, friends and kids

All her children dead in birth

To her it didn’t hurt

She herself was dead within

Surviving the depression and Jim Crow her sin

God gave her spells to conjure and curse

To be her doctors and nurse

Life is bad but which is worse?

To hang from a Texas Maple?

To be a monkey’s paw in the pocket of your enemy? Your murderer?

To use each strand of hair

To use each murderous memory

To use the sound of a fetus falling from a Black Mother’s Womb

To use the sound of the wind as it blows through the smoking husk that used to be a black man’s body and soul

To use the tears of fear, disgust, and bitterness of innocent fleeing Black families and friends as they escape thieves and murderers and their dogs

To spin a powerful spell that protects you and yours…

It was too strong

The power was too much

In the spells she put her trust

The power was too much

There is a balance that must be maintained

In the storm the winds blew

She resisted knowing her life was through

She trusted the spells

And nothing else

She felt she was immune

From all she’d done and would do

But this was her day and she was doomed…

She trusted

She had faith

She went from being an innocent to becoming the cursed

There was no love there in her cold, dead heart

So the decision was made to let the body depart

They didn’t want to find that corpse

They didn’t want to find that corpse

They didn’t want to find that corpse

They wanted to let it stay buried in the sea

Let it be fishy feed

The witch fiend would not let it be

The bones and flesh could be used in spells and should not be wasted

So, it was reclaimed from the sea by the Coast Guard

The reclaimed remains were dressed and rituals were made and potions consumed

And all who drank deep and breathed in deeply died in the room as the fires burned and burned and burned themselves out

Evil surely has its day – then it burns out – Only to rise when the light doesn’t shine before the world – When the salt has lost its flavor

Like today

Do you trust in your spells just like her?

Do you?
