That’s where Jesus was today
The grave until tomorrow
How do dead people behave?
They don’t grow anymore
They don’t innovate
They can’t adapt
They can’t understand
They are annoyed with today
And how alive folks grow, laugh, and play
The dead don’t smile
The dead don’t play
The dead are stuck
Forever in their way
The dead don’t encourage
The dead don’t feel
The dead can’t protect life
The dead don’t kill
Sometimes they send messages
And the messages get through
But that takes a lot of energy for them to do
The one sitting on your chest is a witch who envies you
She isn’t dead – she’s alive through and through
The monster in the closet and under the bed
Is a person who worries about you kids
No the boogie man is not a monster who is dead
It’s the worry of someone who loves you
You are in their hearts and their head
What knocked the picture off the wall
Is the scared spirit of the person coming to call
A visitor coming to your house
But their scared of you
They have the soul of a mouse
When the phone rings in the middle of night
Wakes you up and fills you with fright
Is a dead person apologizing to you
Now that we don’t have landlines they don’t come through
It’s okay
We all do what we’re supposed to do
Some of us are cursed
It comes from how we’re bred
Some of us are born here and already dead
If it hates it’s mother or other humankind
It’s not alive, it’s dead you’ll find
The thing that can take a life and grin and gather round
Is a dead thing, a deathly thing – here the truth is found
In a family where rape and incest abounds
There! RIGHT THERE! Dead things are found
Life begets life
Death begets death
Aren’t you glad you are alive?
It’s best for your health.
