You don’t know this about me Dear Reader, but I was sneaky when I was in High School! LOL!
I HAD to be! Why? Well for 1 years I sold Watchtowers and Awakes from door to door in my own neighborhood. It was called field service. What is really was? Magazine and Book sales for a publishing house out of Brooklyn, New York. Should I put that on my resume? I was a qualified sales manager and bookkeeper at 18 years old. The job I got? Cashier/Caller for Sam’s Wholesale Club part time working for Larry Thibadeaux. The good news I did get stock working at Sam’s and stock just kept on splitting! But that is another story for another time…if you want me to tell you that story, leave a comment below!
Now, let’s talk about prom…it was a major project! First of all, I needed a boyfriend but not any boyfriend. I wanted muscles! Allllll over his body!!! So, I looked around there was nothing. I started dating a tall, skinny guy. I can’t remember his name though. Then my charcoal, boyish Bridgett (my evil step mother’s burnt Oreo cookie daughter started a rumor). She spread the rumor that I was interested in Steve Harvey’s nephew Tommie…yes that nephew Tommie. Let me tell you. He was skinny as a reed and twice as ugly. The other guy I was dating was handsome, tall, but very immature. I am told he ended up being a police officer.
Anyway, nephew Tommie’s girlfriend was instigated by Bridgette to fight me over Nephew Tommie! LOL! It’s funny now but at the time I was mortified. There is no way I would ever date Nephew Tommie. Let me tell you something, Tommie actually thought that perhaps it was true but he saw on my face that there was no way in hell and his girlfriend was a dumb twit to ever think it could be true. Ugh. Anyway, I suppose that’s why he and Steve Harvey became two thieves in a pod. They can relate to each other. Sigh… me, myself I wanted somebody dreamy, muscular, with a deep voice and a sparkle in his eyes.
That was Roderick Davis. Of course, he doesn’t look like that anymore, he resembles his spirit now – we all do eventually. What you are on the inside you body develops into over time. C’est la vie…
Anyway, Roderick made my dream happen as I knew he would. He was from California. He was tall, muscular, and handsome! He wasn’t from Texas, he was well fed with a laugh that was infectious! He wasn’t perfect of course. The best man for me is a firstborn who was raised to rule! The baby of the family is not the best man for me. A baby ruling when the first born rules is an abomination to me. Anyway…
Back to prom…
Step One: The dress.
I went with a white dress, my mistake, my designer was a lesbian instead of a Queen. Pamela Smith. She had made many dresses for me to model her designs. Beautiful dresses. So I thought that she would love to make a prom dress for me. Wrong. It was white lace with a bodice and flared skirt…Something like this:

It’s alright. Right? However, had a Queen sewn a custom prom dress for me it would have come with sequins and a tiara!!! Like this:

See what I mean? Additionally, my Queen, Moon would have made sure that I was pampered and spa treated for my special night. I would have came back to Moon with 150 numbers of prom participants wanting a dress like mine. Why didn’t I work with Moon instead of Pamela? Moon committed suicide. He was in love, the love wasn’t returned so a great talent left the planet.
Pamela’s dress for me looked okay. Anyway, Pamela brought the dress to me at Cynthia Barnes house. Cynthia was a “worldly” friend of mine. We did my hair and makeup plus packed my overnight bag. Since prom was on the north side I would be staying with Mrs. Aubrey my R.W.S. teacher. She was a Jehovah’s Witness too but she was still human. She saw what I endured every day for 3 whole years. I didn’t care that she felt sorry for me. Any port in the storm, baby, any SAFE port in the storm. I was able to go to prom have a great time, go with a Baller/an athlete/a gentleman.
When Cynthia saw Rod, he eyes popped! He was in his tuxedo and it was highlighting the body underneath…Oh what a night!!!
Roderick had a white Lincoln Town car for us. He took care of everything. Dinner was at The Boston Sea Party and it was horrible!!! We met up with other couples of course the guys were on the football team and we were “the wives”. We all looked awesome but my dress was custom and you could tell the difference! All the other dresses were on trend:

What can I say? It was a Madonna inspired time! I wasn’t inspired by her though…I was inspired by elegance and art including my Mother’s wedding pictures from before I was born. My Mother was elegant, refined, and holy to me. Madonna was doing her thing but she couldn’t hold a candle to my Mom.
After the wedding my Mom left in a Thunderbird with “Just Married” in the back window and steamers with cans trailing behind! She looked so happy and was rocking white gloves and a little white cowboy hat leaning out her window waving! Daddy was behind the wheel with a big old grin on his face! LOL! Such happy people! They were my inspiration, not Madonna…

We drank long island teas at the Boston Sea Party and ate the bread they put on the table for us. We were too young to drink but it was prom after all. The waitresses took Polaroid pictures of us for us. By the time the lobsters and baked potatoes came we were full of bread and giggling too much to eat. We all got doggie bags and headed out to our cars. We made it to the ballroom of a hotel I can’t remember the name of – safely… we stood in line to take pictures very proud of ourselves. This was for Rod’s family as my family had no idea where I was! Jehovah’s Witnesses be damned!!!! They did everything to ruin my youth but I enjoyed myself anyway without doing drugs, getting raped, killed, demon possessed or any of the other curses that they brainwashed us with.
I was supper happy! Roderick and I danced and my boobs came out of my dress! I laughed and so did Rod. His football coach popped a boner and Roderick was “upgraded” on the football team. If you have a girlfriend the coach wants to “do” you are given more respect. SMH… what a world!
Rod dropped me at Ms. Aubrey’s and I told her all about prom and showed her my Polaroids from dinner. I slept like a baby that night and woke up with a smile on my face… Rod was at the door. We were going to breakfast with his Uncle and his Aunt then we were meeting the gang for dinner and a movie. I was so tired but I went along with what Rod wanted to do.
Ms. Aubrey hugged us both and started to cry…such a sweet lady! I left all my Polaroids at her house and she had them to this day…sigh…Whenever I visit her we still talk about prom. I can’t believe how I looked that night. I love seeing me “happy”. Ms. Aubrey never had a daughter of her own and she was more than a Mom to me during a time when that is what I needed instead of a distant Jehovah’s Witness who cared nothing about my humanity and happiness.
Thank You Yeshua! You have always been in my corner, ALWAYS.
So, that was prom for me. Where is all those kids today? Here, there, and everywhere!

While you are climbing the Ladder of Success – Don’t let the boys look under your dress.”
