4/4 Common time

Depending on the context, 4/4 most commonly refers to a musical time signature or a measurement for hardwood lumber. [1, 2]

1. Music: “Common Time”

In music, 4/4 is the most widely used time signature, often called “common time”. [3, 4]

  • Top Number (4): Indicates there are 4 beats in each measure (or bar).
  • Bottom Number (4): Specifies that a quarter note receives one beat.
  • How it feels: It creates a steady, even pulse (count: 1-2-3-4), common in pop, rock, and classical music. In written music, it is sometimes replaced by a large letter “C”. [5, 6, 7, 8, 9]

2. Woodworking: Lumber Thickness

In the hardwood industry, 4/4 (pronounced “four-quarter”) is a standard naming convention for thickness. [1, 10]

  • Meaning: It indicates the board is 1 inch thick in its rough-sawn state (4 quarters of an inch = 1 inch).
  • Actual Thickness: Once the wood is planed smooth (surfaced), a 4/4 board typically has a finished thickness of about 3/4″ to 13/16″.
  • Other Sizes: Similarly, 5/4 is 1.25 inches thick, and 8/4 is 2 inches thick. [1, 11, 12, 13, 14]

3. Slang and Social Media

  • “Ate”: On platforms like TikTok, “4+4” (which equals 8) is used as a play on the word “ate”. It’s a compliment used to say someone did a great job or looks very good (e.g., “That outfit is 4+4” means “That outfit ate”).
  • Firearms: In hip-hop slang, “4-4” often refers to a .44 caliber handgun.
  • Numerology: Some view “4/4” as an “angel number” or portal (especially on April 4th), symbolizing stability, protection, and divine alignment. [15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21]
