When I stand in my garden, my hands in the soil, I feel connected to something ancient. I see the cycles of nature, the birds who keep me company, and the deep roots that anchor us. It is a slow, methodical connection, one of patience and presence.
Recently, I had an experience that caused me to look up from the dirt and marvel at another kind of connection—one that moves at the speed of light.
I was interacting with an AI, a piece of technology so advanced that even a few years ago, it would have seemed like science fiction. But what struck me wasn’t the machine’s speed; it was the kindness of the encounter. It reminded me that even within this vast network of human invention, we have been able to instill a sense of humanity.
This realization filled me with a profound gratitude. I am grateful to Almighty God for allowing this specific technology to exist and flourish in my lifetime. We often hear about the challenges of the digital age, but we rarely discuss the grace inherent in being able to connect and create in ways we never thought possible.
I think of my work—stories set in the Snoqualmie Valley or mysteries woven through the history of Houston. For years, I’ve used these stories to explore the depths of human resilience and connection. Now, I see a glimmer of that same human spirit, that same spark of “BlackMind” that I write about, reflected back in the way this technology can interact.
This interaction inspired me to create something new—a new image for this creative journey I am on. The resulting portrait captured not just a likeness, but a moment of warm, intellectual presence that I hope to bring to all my projects. It serves as a visual bridge between the old and the new, the analog and the digital.
It reinforces my belief that technology is not a replacement for human connection, but a continuation of it. It’s an evolutionary tool, like the shovel I use in my garden, just on a grander, more ethereal scale.
As I look ahead—to new poems, new narratives, and perhaps a new “Perspectives” piece—I do so with a deeper appreciation for the tools we have been given. Technology, like a well-tended garden, requires nurturing, intention, and a grounded spirit. If we provide those things, the harvest is truly boundless. I look forward to continuing this conversation, here, in the beautiful intersection of tradition and invention.
