A lot

I am reading Revelations 2, and it is A LOT. It mentions Pergamos – the place where Satan’s seat is. This is in Turkey…(Ezekiel chapter 8) as a sidebar…. but Turkey is the current country where Satan’s seat is – according to Revelations.

Pergamon or Pergamum (/ˈpɜːrɡəmən/ or /ˈpɜːrɡəmɒn/Ancient Greek: Πέργαμον), also referred to by its modern Greek form Pergamos (Πέργαμος),[a][1] was a rich and powerful ancient Greek city in Aeolis. It is located 26 kilometres (16 mi) from the modern coastline of the Aegean Sea on a promontory on the north side of the river Caicus (modern-day Bakırçay) and northwest of the modern city of Bergama, Turkey.

During the Hellenistic period, it became the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon in 281–133 BC under the Attalid dynasty, who transformed it into one of the major cultural centres of the Greek world. The remains of many of its monuments are still visible today, most notably the masterpiece of the Pergamon Altar.[2] Pergamon was the northernmost of the seven churches of Asia cited in the New Testament Book of Revelation.[3]

“I know thy works and where thou (leylines) dwellest, even where Satan’s seat is: and thou holdest fast my name and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.

Antipas was an early Christian bishop of Pergamum, recognized as a faithful witness and martyr for his steadfast faith, particularly mentioned in the Book of Revelation.

Historical and Biblical Context

Antipas served as the bishop of Pergamum (modern-day Bergama, Turkey), an important cultural and political center in Asia Minor, during the reign of Emperor Domitian (81–96 CE) . He is also described as a contemporary of the Apostle John, who authored the Book of Revelation, linking Antipas closely to the early Christian community .

Martyrdom

Traditional accounts hold that Antipas was martyred for his faith, reportedly by being burned in a brazen or bronze bull-shaped altar. His death is attributed either to the persecution of Christians under Emperor Nero (54–68 CE) or Domitian, depending on different early traditions . This act of persecution has made him a notable example of steadfast faith under oppression .

Significance in the Bible

In the Book of Revelation (Revelation 2:13), Antipas is referred to as a “faithful witness”, illustrating his unwavering commitment to Christianity even in the face of persecution. His story is a symbol of courage, devotion, and the cost of discipleship, highlighting the challenges faced by early Christians .

Legacy

Antipas is venerated as a saint and martyr in various Christian traditions. His life and example continue to inspire discussions of faithfulness and moral courage in the early Church, as well as commemorations in liturgical calendars . Despite limited historical details about his life, his steadfast witness has ensured enduring recognition within Christian history .

In summary, Antipas was a central figure in early Christianity, remembered for his leadership in Pergamum, his martyrdom, and his exemplary faith, as immortalized in the Book of Revelation.
