“Like a bird handled by humans whose flock would not accept it back, Rob now wore the unwashable scent of the Ivy League.”
― Jeff Hobbs, The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace: A Brilliant Young Man Who Left Newark for the Ivy League
Robert Peace, a young man raised by a single mother who never fit in. Robert Peace, a young man who could ask a friend for $10,000 to start a drug enterprise but not really communicate with his friend to tell him his true feelings.
Robert Peace, a young man who had a father who was so “close” to him yet this same father was sent away to jail and wanted his son to get him out.
Robert Peace, a young man who could ask for $10,000 from his dorm mate and the dorm mate, Jeff Hobbs, said yes.
Do you see anything wrong with this picture?
Robert Peace, a young man who had a mother who worked three jobs to make sure she was never around him.
Robert Peace, a young man whose mother never moved from the exact neighborhood that killed him.
Robert Peace, a gifted Yale student juggles the demands of his promising academic future and the responsibility he feels to help his incarcerated father.
Really?
Are we missing something to this story?
On the importance of self-examination
“I believe that the unexamined life is not worth living”. – James Baldwin
Graduate School Application:
Statement of Purpose
To Whom It May Concern:
Science is my passion. I believe science has helped me navigate the complex systems that have surrounded me, the pressures that I’ve encountered in my life. My interests have centered on immunology…and the states and functions of nucleic acids. This area focuses on origins and environments to help treat incurable cancers like the one that took the life of my father. I believe these therapeutic applications will aid out understanding of disease…and eventually prevent all manner of catastrophic instances before they occur… The knowledge I gain by earning a PhD will help me achieve my career objectives which include educating future scientists as a professor and continuing scientific research to better understand the pathways of life.
I am forever grateful for the love I’ve received, the love I’ve been able to give, the places I’ve found myself, and the knowledge that these places were always here and now.
Thank you for considering this application.
– Robert DeShaun Peace
Robert DeShaun Peace chose to die. I believe he told his friend to tell the gang members the information they needed to find Rob and end him. Grief is a terrible thing in you ever allow it a foothold in your soul. With Robert, I believe that his ego said he had the power to over rule all the adults in his life. But why? What gave him that confidence?
What comes to your mind? Take a guess… leave it in the comments below if you dare…
Unlike all the rest of us who live hard childhoods we strive to be a BETTER person. We don’t address what was done or not done in our childhood. We go to therapists. We talk it out. We cry it out. Then we dry our eyes and go on to live our lives the best way we can surrounded by persons who are trustworthy.
Rob saw himself as GOD. He would free the innocent. He would stand up against gangsters to help his family and friends.
With this faith, he was doing it… then his father died. Then Rob knew he could fail. Yet, life and death was NOT in his hands. He was just a child. However, Rob really took this hard. The failure of his God complex which was unreal compounded by the death of his father, his reality.
When was this child ever a child? He had to be everything for every body but who was ever really there for him? Yes, he was smart but he was still just a child.
When he finally saw that his abilities was limited he committed suicide by gangster. Why do I say he committed suicide? People who want to live never choose drugs or liquor, especially someone pursuing their PhD.
In the final moments he changed his mind. In the final moments the “light came on” and he ran. He ran because now that he understood what life was all about but it was too late. Dharma. Once something is set in motion it can’t be stopped.
Rest in Peace Robert DeShaun Peace. There is nothing lofty about death, drugs, guns nor arrogance.
There is only one Almighty God. There is humility is accepting this. Even Satan who was in the presence of God made this mistake. Amen Pride does goeth before a fall.
“I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God.” – Isaiah 45:5
Do you know how disrespectful it is for someone to usurp your authority and undermine your work? Like you ain’t nothing, I can do what you do and better?
For those who take that posture, your fate is set. It will NEVER end well. NEVER.
Robert went from this:

To this:

Madness.
Did you know about Robert Peace? I only found out about him yesterday. I was inspired to write what I did about him because as we get into the holiday season you think of all those you want to see. I think about my family. I think about the ones who aren’t here.
I understand grief especially during this time of the year. Prayer and therapy helps.
Take care of yourself and live your life.
Selah.
