Remembering LaLa Brown

Who was LaLa Brown? She was a singer who was here but now she’s gone. She left her name to carry on. Those who knew her, knew her well…those who didn’t can go to …. well that’s how the saying goes…

She was a gifted artist well loved and supported by her family. She had a long career before aged 16. After this age, she stepped up her drive to become a signed artist with a deal. She attained some success. Then, she ran into that transition between adolescence and adulthood. The choices made in this era are life altering. For LaLa Brown, the choices she made were life ending.

Where did her story happen? New York? Los Angeles? Chicago? No

Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

I know what you are thinking: She must have been doing something very evil for this to happen to her.

Not really.

Some things are mysterious. The case of LaLa Brown’s death is still unsolved. There was no forced entry meaning LaLa knew her killer.

Yolanda Rose “LaLa” Brown (May 20, 1986 – October 19, 2007) was an American R&B singer best known for being featured on the track “S.E.X.” with Lyfe Jennings, which reached No. 3 on the BillboardHot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart[1] and peaked at No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 2006.[2] Brown and her record producer JeTannue “Kool Aid” Clayborn were murdered on October 19, 2007, at a recording studio in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.[3] The case remains unsolved.

Update this month: https://www.tmj4.com/news/local-news/police-suspect-in-custody-in-connection-with-lala-browns-death

On October 22, 2007, Brown and her record producer/boyfriend, JeTannue “Kool-Aid” Clayborn, were discovered shot and killed by an unknown gunman in the Loud Enuff Productionz recording studio in Milwaukee. Both had been dead at least 3 days before they were discovered, with the date of the murder later determined to be October 19, 2007. Although autopsies were performed on both Brown and Clayborn, results were never released. Brown was survived by her mother, father, siblings, as well as her daughter.

Brown’s funeral was held on October 25, 2007, at the Mason Temple Church of God in Christ, Milwaukee. Hundreds of people attended, including Lyfe Jennings. Burial followed at Graceland Cemetery in Milwaukee.[4] The case was featured on America’s Most Wanted in February 2010.[5] On October 22, 2012, TV One aired a Celebrity Crime Files episode about La La Brown’s life and death.[6] As of May 2022, the case has not been solved and police continue to search for a suspect and motive for the killings.[7]

Do you think that LaLa and Kool Aid – their souls are still together? What do you feel about it all? Can you see them as spirits watching the shooter stand over their bodies? He likely spit on them, then left the studio… LaLa and Kool Aid probably watched over their bodies until three days later when her parents came looking for her and found them both. I can only imagine…

When you die in violence, there is a “scar” upon the soul, don’t you think? I don’t think any soul that dies by violent betrayal turns the other cheek and moves on to their afterlife.

I have read and reread information on LaLa Brown and Kool Aid…it doesn’t make sense. The only lesson I can glean is that you have to be present in your own life and make the best choices you can. Pursuing the music business is not a good choice. I can not recall anyone in all these years in the music industry that has done well. Not one.

For example:

  • Meg Thee Stallion: Shot in her feet
  • Beyonce: Working on tour in her middle age with a husband and young children
  • Doja Kat: Lost in the sauce right now
  • Nikki Minaj: Lil Wayne sold her masters (SMH)
  • Whitney Houston: Lost her voice, lost her life mysteriously
  • Toni Braxton: Health issues, bankruptcy – I am glad she is still with us though
  • Tamar Braxton: Vince betrayed her; relationship issues – I pray for success for her, she is VERY talented just as all of her family is
  • Adele: Back spasms, relationship issues, weight issues…
  • Brittney Spears: So much heartache from just about every side
  • Justin Bieber: More heartache than the general public can every know, at least he is married to someone who truly cares for him. (My opinion)
  • Will Smith: His rap career was a breath of fresh air, no cursing, etc… I think he could have done well with that. He had a career, a wife, a son…he could have went on to M.I.T. and had a beautiful life. He made a choice to go into acting. Long, long, long story short he has a bigger family now. He has been through a lot. He has a trooper in a wife and soldiers for children. Will Smith is tough. It’s clearly genetic.

Will swam with the sharks. He made that choice. His intelligence has allowed him to not be consumed although he has had some experiences for sure. When I compare paths of so many musicians, I see those who are blessed to still be here…can you?

Yolanda Rose Brown, I remember you today as October crouches near today. I am considering the choices you made as your alleged killer has been arraigned this month. Maybe we will finally know why they killed you and JeTannue Clayborn.

Psalm 91

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.[a]
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”

Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes
    and see the punishment of the wicked.

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
    and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
    no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
    you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

14 “Because he[b] loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
    I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.”
