Now, the movie opens with a mom sitting beside her child’s crib humming a melody to a quiet child.
The doorbell rings and another lady comes to discuss, Nicholas. Long story short, this is a story about a seventeen year old boy who lies, and lies, and lies, and lies to his mother to begin with – then he lies to his dad…
The grandfather is a wealthy barnacle who avoids every sliver of humanity, so the father tries to navigate the thin line between being a parent and having a life. It’s torture.
This movie should be shown be required viewing for every single 7th grader. I know this is a radical position in today’s world. Today, we are supposed to lie, and lie, and lie some more to our children… well, everyone except the dog. We are legislating and litigating hiding the truth. It’s the classic “sweeping it under the rug”. We lie to ourselves. Lauren Hill once sang, “People lie to God too, so what makes you think that they won’t lie to you?”

It’s okay to be dramatic. It happens in the body. What I saw in this movie is the young man had no extra curricular activities. I see why most schools offer these activities. It is very important. When I was a freshman in high school it was foreshadowing for the life I live today – I had a whole year of peace, harmony, friendship, and art! It was magic! I was also on the volleyball team and worked in the counselor’s office. Ms. Cotton was my coach and she was amazing…well, actually all of my teachers were amazing! Bless them all!!
All through the movie, the parents are confused. They do the best they can but the young man has his own fate. He was inappropriate in many ways… sigh… Either way it goes in this life sink or swim time comes for us all.
If you are a high school student reading this, go to college night. Get into an extra curricular program whether it’s art, sports, volunteering, sign up for summer camps, go on every field trip, and keep a journal so you can publish your book while you attend soccer games and recitals for your own children.
If you are having anxiety and fear – tough titty. I went through it. I asked for help. Pamela Smith from the JW hall told me about a job while I was still in high school. I went there and filled out the application on my own and Larry Thibadeaux called me, interviewed me and hired me. I paid all my senior dues myself. I bought my own class ring. I attended Minority Introduction to Engineering at Prairie View A&M University and graduated. I took Oceanography at Texas A&M University and graduated. Mrs. Cook my Algebra professor is an Earth Angel. Mrs. Beck my earth science professor is also an Earth Angel. All of my teachers, professors, counselors, coaches, principals, administrators, and superintendents are stellar human beings!!!
Sidebar: Did I have a teacher who was inappropriate? Yes. My computer math professor taught me binary and hexadecimal math then tried to come on to me. His nick name by all the students was “Boo Boo” also known as Boo Boo Bear! He really looked just like him and they were the same size about 3 feet 3 inches tall. So, I wasn’t afraid, just ashamed of him. I no longer respected him. Even so, he participated in a teacher vs. students basketball game as a fundraiser for all of our vocational programs! That is what public school and college used to be just like now, difficult yet rewarding if you want it to be.
I look at this movie and think how crazy this story is. Do you know I even went to prom with Rod Davis, a football player from California? LOL! True story! We had a white Lincoln Town Car and ended up with crabs – yes, those kinds! We went to a after hours club off of I-45 north near Greenspoint. We all ended up having to shave each other and scrub with Brillo pads the next day instead of meeting the class at Surfside beach! All this despite going to the kingdom hall every time the ground cracked!
It really is your viewpoint and choices that make your life.

Being a parent is difficult. I will just say that. If I had saw this movie in the 7th grade for Biology class, I would have made far different choices. Still, I did my best – I followed universal law and I have no regrets. I won’t live a life of lies and delusions for anyone.
