This is why I have nothing but appreciation for law enforcement. Many years ago, when T-Rex were numerous and the brontosaurus were our “elephants”, I studied Criminal Justice at university.

I. Was. Appalled.

The Maestas name is familiar to me. I designed a website for a non profit in King County where a Maestas was the executive director. He was a nice, quiet gentleman. https://www.elcentrodelaraza.org/

El Centro de la Raza History Book

From its beginnings in Seattle nearly fifty years ago, El Centro de la Raza has been translated as “The Center for People of All Races.” In Seattle’s El Centro de la Raza: Dr. King’s Living Laboratory, Bruce E. Johansen, with valuable aid from Estela Ortega, executive director, and Miguel Maestas, Housing and Development director at El Centro, explores how the center has become part of a nationally significant work in progress on human rights and relations based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s concept of a “Beloved Community” that crosses all ethnic, racial, and other social boundaries. Johansen’s examination of the history of the center highlights its mission to consciously provide intercultural communication and cooperation as an interracial bridge, uniting people on both a small and a large scale, from neighborhood communities to international relations. Scholars of Latin American studies, race studies, international relations, sociology, and communication will find this book especially useful.

Bottom line is this Maestas will only serve 6 months on a plea deal. I suppose the message to parents is be aware of what your children are into. We have always lived in reckless times. I made the decision after just a peek under the “social order of things” and I KNEW, I don’t want to live in “the under belly” of what happens in our neighborhoods and in our neighbors homes.

I wish I could say that what I learned in my criminal justice courses were the miracles that happen in homes. I wish that I was exposed to film upon film of 115 pound mothers lifting trucks and cars off of their little babies. I wish that I was exposed to miraculous feats of heroism by men who are regular guys pulling citizens from burning buildings, and children who saved their school friends during school shootings, etc… if so, I would likely still be in criminal justice today.
