Just ten years ago, 80% of Black beauty supply store shelves were stocked with products for chemically straightened hair while 20% of products were made for the naturalistas among us. According to Forbes, the opposite is true today. And as more Black women make the transition from relaxed to natural hair, that figure becomes slimmer and slimmer. So what’s driving this change, and could it ultimately lead to the demise and death of the perm era? Well, that depends on who you ask.
“I can’t imagine what my mother went through in the 1990s and feeling even more pressure then to adapt to status quo or societal acceptability. But now that I have my own voice and the audacity to wear my crown anyway I choose, I won’t return to damaging chemicals.”
While market research firm Kline & Co. reports that sales from chemical straightening products have been on the decline for at least a decade (for a multitude of reasons), a recent study conducted by The National Institutes of Health has assessed that “Women who have used hair straightening chemicals, or relaxers, may be at higher risk of developing uterine cancer.”
I am certain all those Black American Female CEOs, VPs, Chairladies and Board Members will have incredibly soft landings as they take up other ventures that accept their Sisters just as they are. Right? Surely these companies are all headed by Black Americans, right??
For many little girls application of this concoction was used to hide paternity of the child. That’s correct. So Daddies, if your significant other put a perm on your child’s hair against your wishes, please DNA test your child because she likely isn’t yours. Yes, women cheat, are raped, have to put out to keep their jobs. She has to put out just like you do to keep her job – just like you do in America. This is not true in all America but it IS true for all beautiful Americans be they woman, man, child, dog, horse and/or billy goat… Please note nothing is 100% so if you are not an American suffering from severe mental incapacitation, I suggest you leave the USA – you were one of the newborns the nurses did not “drop”.
