Poem by Coletha Albert: Safe, Seen, Loved

In all the paths I have trod

In all of my studies of God

What remains today

Is greater than what fell away

What fell away anyway?

Strength didn’t

Courage didn’t

Wisdom didn’t

Safe, Seen, and Loved I am

I began in “blacker the berryism”

It fell away

I looked at cult membership

It fell away

I looked into la familia and comrades too

Losers, freaks, imbeciles? True

They fell away

They fell away too

All those spirits only want you to be what they can perceive

All those spirits were fear and loathing from the dirty south to the wild wild west…

They fell away

When surrounded by idiots it’s easy to tell

They see what they want to see

They can’t fathom truth

They can’t love themselves, others are you

They use

They lie

They cheat

They have no honor

They have no gratitude

They have no empathy

They have no dignity

Still, they have GREAT power

And if you are careless they will devour you too

They will see when you are vulnerable

They will know when you are unprotected

They recognize when your choices are not loving

Yes

It’s no fun when the platypus has the Winchester

Just ask my Uncle Chester

Every generation brings a bevy of fools

However, the genius does come through

Sometimes they survive too

In miracles

They are

Safe, Seen and Loved.
