Poem by Coletha Albert: My Testimony

My life changed and it took a week or two before

God gave me actual sign that I couldn’t ignore

This morning I got up and there was no water in the bathroom

I started a load of clothes and the washer complained

I restarted the machine

Then last night I remember that my dog came into my room growling loudly

I had forgotten to put her into her kennel for the night

My life changed and I didn’t know it

But God

I had been praying, fasting, singing

Visiting churches

With disappointment in my soul as I left each one

I have been seeking, searching, looking, wanting

God to move in my life

I expected a lightning bolt

But God

I expected a shower of confetti

But God

I expected the dessert to bloom

And my dead loved ones to rise

But God

I expected to never be alone and lonely again

But God

I have never been able to find Elevation Church Ministry until today

I have never been able to do many, many things in Jesus’s Name

But God

Though I struggled, and have been addled

God has always been here with me

I just kept going

I just kept going

No matter what I couldn’t do

I just kept going

Through frustration

I kept going

At the side of Joseph’s grave

I kept going

As I held Jonathan’s hand

I kept going

Everything taken from me

I kept going

No money

Through a pandemic

No mother

I kept going

No father

I kept going

No family

I kept going

No friends

I kept going

Because…

But the Lord was with Joseph

And Joseph said – You meant it for evil but God meant it for good.

And the Lord was with Joseph

And the Lord was with Joseph

On Friday this week

I sat talking to a work colleague

After being upset as once again Black Women are used politically saying that they kill their babies more than other women

I felt great anger

But God

I plead the blood of Jesus Christ over all Black Ladies

Sold into slavery

Envied

Beloved

Lied on

Looked up in jail

Forgotten

And appointed, anointed, powerful, blessed, respected, remembered

By God

Amen, this world has been totally evil to Black Ladies and their children for generations Amen

The world has meant it for evil BUT GOD means it for our good.

Selah.

God blessed me today because I was allowed to hear your sermon for the first time ever.

Today my world shifted because God removed that which was oppressing me… Amen

Everything is as God has willed it.

Nothing is a surprise to God.

Somethings are behind me.

Other things are yet before me.

Around me is a great commission of angels to protect and keep for a morning such as this…

“23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.” Psalm
