Raised as a Jehovah’s Witness who was slated to marry Christopher Joel Jones although he never gave me a ring or formally proposed. My friends were older girls from my Kingdom Hall and other Kingdom Halls and they were all lesbians in zee closet. I never knew. I was left a house in Houston, Texas by my Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Willie Mae Bozier and Evelyn Turner set me up with a house and a car (Ford Mustang) when I was a little girl – yet my Mother and her sisters decided that in no way would they respect those elders. Their lives have been less than stellar – it is what it is. I tell Madea every day to have mercy on them but she ain’t listening. I am reminded to stay “in a child’s place.”

So, I mind my own business. I do what Elohim gives me to do! How about you?

Keep going…no complaining, no pity party, no depression…just put one foot in front of the other – keep going…

There are a million stories in this world, mine is one and so is yours. Somewhere people are hurting, dying, laughing, sleeping…living. I don’t worry about folks who betrayed me, hate me, envy me, or just too thick to love me. I no longer give them any space in my mind, spirit, or my life. I enjoy my friends, my family, my life. I am appreciative of all I have endured. I am grateful for all I never experienced. I am thankful for my liberty. I am so happy for all the relationships I never had to suffer. I am joyful for all the great relationships I have had over many, many decades. We have gone many, many journeys around our sun.

Anyway, have you seen Adrift on Netflix? It reminds me of The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. Adrift is based on a real story that happened in 1983. Where were you in 1983? Who were you in 1983? What dimension? What galaxy? What universe? Were you even human in 1983?

In researching Tami Oldham and the Adrift true story, we discovered that the real-life events depicted in the 2018 movie spanned the months of September, October, and November 1983. 23-year-old Tami Oldham and her British fiancé, Richard Sharp (34), had been a pleasure sailing his 36-foot sailboat, the Mayaluga, for the previous six months. They made the decision to accept a job delivering a 44-foot yacht, the Hazana, from Tahiti to San Diego where it would be received by a new owner. They had been less than three weeks into their 4,000-mile trip when Hurricane Raymond hit. -Chicago Tribune

Please remember the internet went live in 1995. Mobile phones after that and they were dumbphones. Do you understand what I am saying? There was no GPS like we have today. There was no accuweather.com. There were no cases of bottled water to be taken on board a boat in 1983. There was no 911 to call in an emergency. We took few chances as these folks did. I think due to their mistake though new protocols were created. What a world, a dimension, a time we all survived…

Now with all we have today to promote survival and safety… I say keep going… no complaining, no pity parties, no depression…just keep going…

Did Tami Oldham’s fiancé Richard Sharp survive the hurricane in real life?

No. In real life, as they continued to battle Hurricane Raymond on October 12, 1983, Richard Sharp sent his fiancée Tami below deck to rest. He used a safety line to tether himself to the yacht in an attempt to ride out the storm and keep the boat afloat. The yacht capsized and Tami hit her head when she was thrown against the cabin wall. The force of the blow knocked her out, and the last thing she can remember hearing was Sharp screaming, “Oh my God!” She didn’t wake up for 27 hours, and when she did, she went above deck and discovered Richard’s safety line hanging off the edge of the boat. Her fiancé was lost at sea. She would never see him again. -Chicago Tribune

Sherry began sailing as a child in Seattle, often going on week-long excursions with her family. She windsurfed and sailed Hobie Cats in college and graduate school while earning a masters in biomedical engineering. Sherry has spent the last 25 years teaching yoga, reiki healing, and leading yoga retreats, and is looking forward to offering a day-long yoga sailing retreat this summer.
