Review of Jailbirds New Orleans

I am watching Jailbirds New Orleans and I am appalled. Totally appalled. There are meds. There are ladies sitting on floors and talking through the toilet to other inmates in different sectors in the jail. They are talking through the pipes. Some of the ladies have months sentenced to them. Some of the ladies are just waiting for their court date… They break the rules regularly. There is a panel of guards who meet out punishments by consensus. They have days when they line up for commissary where they can buy chips and other extra things. They constantly comb and brush each other’s hair. They cry a lot. They scream sometimes. They make threats. They are watched constantly.

It’s madness. It’s the basis of many nightmares of non incarcerated people. Being trapped everyday with strangers with nothing to do but time, time and more time. They didn’t show the psychiatric ward. They don’t show the clinic or the mail room. No one received any mail but one lady got a visitor. All I could think is: My God this is just sad. I saw two people just trying to be as normal as they know how. She was obsessed with her hair being done when he came to visit. Meanwhile, he doesn’t get the hair thing. He states that whomever is doing her hair like this in jail if they had been braiding hair on the streets they would not be in jail right now.

How about that? If the hairdresser lady in jail had chose to go to school and be a hairdresser on the streets she would have never gone to jail.

He’s right.

I am completely amazed to hear such wisdom. My brain is wired a bit differently I suppose. I could never do hair. I could never do crime. Somehow I know that getting high “partying” is not what the brain tells a drug addict. They believe they are having fun when all I have seen as a young, young child is total insanity. People who can’t protect themselves much less their children. People who don’t know to take a scalded dog to the vet immediately. People who think the best way to deal with the adulterer next door is to hex her. Meanwhile, what happens to that ladies sons. I see how drug addicts can’t communicate with non drug addicts.

I see the stupid decisions they make and how easy they are to be controlled and manipulated and they can’t see or don’t mind. It makes me angry. I see them as flawed. I see them as weak. I remember when I was told they were demon possessed. I was taught that when an addict gets high, a filthy evil spirit inhabits their body because the drug won’t let them keep them out. Once they are in, they are in to stay. The demon possessed is but a vessel for the demon. They are like the airplane and the pilots are the demons. They control that plane. They can crash it when ever they like, however they like. This strengthens my resolution against drug addicts.

One inmate said just because she has been in jail does not mean the addiction has died. Creepy right? As she waited to be released she was crying her eyes out. Another inmate said that they have seen ladies be released and the next day they die from an overdose.

Yet when one girl got out and her Mom was there to pick her up, I cried. Lord, have mercy…https://www.netflix.com/title/81250179 This is not the kind of show I would ever look at. But, I did and I feel empathy for all those little girls who are now ladies and in jail, addicted, emotionally immature, mentally in stasis. Jail does not address the horcrux. The moment they leave jail the same problem faces them; dealing with themselves.

Being in quarantine, we have all been on lock down. We do visitation via Zoom. We get commissary via Amazon and Uber eats.

Still, I wished nothing but the best of luck seeing one serve her time and leave. I don’t have enough insight to be afraid for her. I am just happy for this chance for her to have a life and raise her son herself. If you get a chance you should check it out… Respect to Madame Marie LaVeaux always.
