Daddy Jesse – The Shop

Tukwila, WA – The Texas Democrats are on my screen speaking during their second week in Washington, District of Columbia to protest new voting legislation. I am watching KHOU-11 and thinking about my Dad. I recall how carefully he would watch the news, just listening. He never said anything. He would just sit in his LazyBoy comfortable chair and just watch and listen.

I am taking a page out of Daddy Jesse’s book today. I am watching and listening. I am thinking about Daddy’s best friend who died when he was a boy. I don’t know the story and Grand-mommy never brought it up. I only found out about it because when Daddy died that man’s Father was there!

Yes, he had dogged Daddy his whole life! He followed him and stalked him. Daddy did so many bad things to his wives, his children except for Tony and me.

By the time Tony and I were coming of age Daddy was in his fifties. He had so much back luck in his life, so much. Daddy did so many bad things in his life, so much. He was really very lost. I see him as confused, depressed, controlling, immature, hopeless…I see how he loved Grand-mommy… I can still hear his voice speaking to he respectfully calling her “Mother”.

Now that I think of it…I realize he just felt sorry for Tony and me. He related to us very well. Tony and I suffered a great deal by the time Daddy Jesse came into our lives. He was our blessing and we were his. We gave him hope. We renewed his faith in God and he brought life into our lives in a way we had never known.

Life does not make any sense because we can’t know everything or see everything. I always looked at Daddy and how he changed our lives. I never thought we made a positive impact on his life. I didn’t know it was possible. Daddy is everything to me and I remember him and Grand-mommy. I remember their voices and how Daddy ran the shop; how Grand-mommy ran her home.

I remember how Grand-mommy tried to shepherd her little family and how they were the complete opposite to what she had sown.

As the press conference for the Texas Democrats end, I think of that man again. The man who was distraught over the death of his son. I don’t know his name but God bless him and his son. God bless them. I pray that they are at peace today. I pray for your peace today as well. Psalm 91. Psalm 23. Hebrews.
