A well to do Island – A young promiscuous young woman after making several poor decisions…”Oh God, I gave up the cookie again…I promise that if you get me out of this situation with some dignity…just get me out of here…I will never do this again…” Fast forward to her hitting a man due to distracted driving…5 months later they are getting married. Then chaos ensues…
Why am I watching this movie? Netflix suggested it to me…I have not seen this movie in forever…Long ago, I thought of this movie as a bridge builder for African Americans and Black people ie Blacks with money and Blacks without or olde money vs. new money. It is a story as old as time. I have always heard of the rich Black debutante who falls for the “not our kind” man. I read about such a story long, long ago how he married “up” and they always had their “eye” on him. He was never trusted yet he was not shunned because of her status in Black Society. In his obituary this was highlighted heavily. Do I blame them?
Not really.
Those, like me, whose parents did not optimize opportunities know that there is no way we would ever be accepted by the upper classes of olde money even with new money. Why? Well, as a woman, it’s out of the question. An upper class Black man NEVER marries down. He commits to the society and follows all rules. Only the daughter of a “well heeled family” could ever marry down. Now, I am specifically speaking of olde money and new money in the Black Society. Olde money White is a horse of a different color…
Really.
White olde money usually marries how they choose – if he is all about prestige, he marries up. If he is about love and passion, he usually marries down like Prince Charles and that lady he cheated on Princess Diana with, Camilla Parker Bowles. I look at Prince Harry and Meaghan, she is second generation money and very well connected while Harry is 6th in line to the throne. Prince Charles and Prince Harry are married to the loves of their lives…I think that is beautiful and I respect their choices wholeheartedly.
I am not certain if Camilla Parker Bowles had money at the time but Ms. Meaghan Markle was already sophisticated, well heeled, and very proper. Recently, Harry and Meaghan announced they are expecting again. How exciting! Congratulations to them!!
Truly…
The estate where this movie was filmed is very, very impressive. Paula Patton plays Sabrina the bride-to-be who’s getting married at her parents’ waterfront mansion on Martha’s Vineyard. The movie was filmed on location at a house in Nova Scotia, Canada, which doubled for Martha’s Vineyard.

Entering Chilmark
Chilmark on Martha’s Vineyard is a rural protected area on Martha’s Vineyard… The SUV from the ferry in the movie enters this area. I had to find out more about this particular place and this is what I found at ClearGov.com:
DAYTIME POPULATION – 1,065 which represents the effect of persons coming into or leaving a community for work, entertainment, shopping, etc. during the typical workday. An increased daytime population puts greater demand on host community services which directly impacts operational costs. Over half of the population are seniors living alone…household income is half a million per year for most of these. The second income group coming has a household income of only 24K annually. 82 percent of the persons in this area are homeowners, which is impressive to me for sure.
Per Wikipedia the history of Chilmark is:
Chilmark is a town located on Martha’s Vineyard in Dukes County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 866 at the 2010 census.[1] The fishing village of Menemsha is located on the western side of the town along its border with the town of Aquinnah. Chilmark had the highest median home sale price of any town or city in Massachusetts in 2013.[2]

History
Governor Thomas Mayhew, the Elder (March 31, 1593 – March 25, 1682) established the first English settlement of Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and adjacent islands in 1642. The town officially incorporated on September 14, 1694, the first town to separate from the two original towns of Tisbury and Edgartown. The new town was named for Chilmark, the ancestral home of the family of Governor Thomas Mayhew of Tisbury, in the English county of Wiltshire. In 1714, Chilmark was made a township including the island of Nomans Land.
The town was once known for its unusually high percentage of deaf citizens. In 1854, Chilmark had a deaf population of one in every 25 people, while the national average was one deaf person in 5,728. (See Martha’s Vineyard Sign Language.) Today the town is mostly residential, with a small working harbor in Menemsha along the Vineyard Sound side of the town.
In August 2009, 2010 and 2011, President Barack Obama and his family vacationed in Chilmark, renting the Blue Heron Farm.[3][4]
Meanwhile, in the movie my favorite comedian, DeRay Davis, plays the annoying cousin to the groom. Despite their disagreements and a lot of other chaos the wedding does go ahead. Additionally, Loretta Divine was awesome as the Mother of the Groom – she was hurt because she blamed her future daughter in law for many incidents of neglect when all along it was her son. Personally, this is my situation although I know it is my son and not my daughter in law. She has a lot more respect for me than my son ever will. That’s life. I love that this movie does touch on this subject as well as many, many others.
The Cast
All beautiful people everyone. The cast were stellar in their roles. One thing I definitely noticed is that all of these actors except, “the young cousin” and Meaghan Good are all very tall. I admire this very much. Her Grace, Angela Bassett was phenomenal, including her French patois. C’est Magnifique!!!

My Dream
I want to see Jumping the Broom 2 with “Willie” marrying Wife #5 and being happy as well as Loretta Divine’s character dating and marrying at the same house and showing how her son deals with that as well as “Sabrina” being pregnant with their first child.
